The effects of high nitrogen rates on the growth; effective nodulation and dry matter yield of cowpea (Vigna ungiculata (L.) Walp) were investigated at the Babcock University Teaching and Research Farm, Ilishan Remo, Ogun State. Ten treatment combinations obtained from combining levels of two factors namely: fertilizer (Urea) at five (5) levels namely: No – N, 30kgN/ha, 90kgN/ha and 120kgN/ha, and legume crop at two levels (varieties namely; Ife Bimpe and Ife Brown were replicated thrice using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Responses of cowpea in terms of height, nodulation (nodule number and dry weight) and dry matter yield (shoot and root) to the treatment combinations were evaluated at 4, 6 and 8 WAP. At the end of the sampling periods, Ife Brown cowpea variety was found to be the more tolerant to high N rates with respect to the parameters studied.
