Abstract
Abstract
The engagement of adolescents in risky sexual behavior has become a social menace that has constituted great concerns for parents, teachers, school administrators, government and all other stake holders in the upbringing of children. The concern is as a result of the outcome of the involvement in risky sexual behavior such as unwanted pregnancy, vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases etcetera. This study has employed descriptive survey design to examine if parents’ separation, and self-esteem are correlates of undergraduate students’ engagement in risky sexual behavior. Stratified random sampling method was used to select 376 participants from the different subgroup of the university. Data was collected using a self-structured instrument with a reliability score of 0.821. Multiple regression was used to test the hypotheses formulated at 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed a significant relationship between parents separation and risky sexual behavior while self-esteem did not significantly determine risky sexual behavior of undergraduate students. Marital and pre-marital counseling on the effect of separation of couples on the total development of children is recommended.
