Abstract

ABSTRACT The primary aim of information literacy program is to help students learn how to learn and lay a solid foundation for independent, life-long learning. It is therefore imperative that undergraduates acquire the knowledge and skills that define the information literate person. This study used the survey design to identify the perceptual learning styles of students and the methods of information literacy instruction in selected public and private universities in Nigeria. Participants for the study were 253 students randomly selected from four (2 public and 2 private) universities in South-western Nigeria. A self-structured questionnaire was administered to collect data. Analysis was done using descriptive statistics and ANOVA. The findings showed a gap in the methods of information literacy instruction and student learning styles. Kinesthetic and visual learning styles were the most common learning styles among the students while lecturing, library tour and user manual were the most common methods of instruction. Also, a significant difference exists in the learning styles of students in public and private universities while methods of information literacy instruction showed no significant difference
