Parenting styles as correlates of rebellious behaviour among secondary school adolescents

Abstract

This study employed a descriptive survey design to investigate the relationship of parenting styles with adolescents rebelliousness. The sample for the study consisted of 197 randomly selected senior secondary school students from three secondary schools in Ikenne local government of Ogun State, Nigeria. Their ages were between 14 and 20. The instruments used include a 40- item self-structured questionnaire: Parenting Style Questionnaire(PSQ) and a 10 - item Rebelliousness Inventory (RI) developed by the international Personality Item Pool (IPIP) with alpha reliability correlation coefficient was used to test relationship between parenting styles and adolescents rebelliousness. The result of the findings reveal a significant relationship between parenting styles and adolescents rebelliousness while specifically neglectful parenting style was significantly correlated with rebelliousness. However, the result of other parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian and permissiveness) when correlated with rebelliousness did not show any significant relationship. This implies that adolescents neglected by parents are likely to be rebellious. The implications of the study for conselling were highlighted as well.
